Alicia [15]

The seemingly endless expanses of Haradan are just one world inhabited by a multitude of wondrous residents. Most of the inhabitants of these worlds don't even suspect each other's existence or that of the people living in Haradan, as the worlds are separated by a barrier that is impenetrable to mere mortals, and only the greatest of the sorcerers are able to use magic to pass through this curtain. One of these worlds is the world of Irtita, which is shrouded in eternal night. Its dark valleys and the shores of its inky black seas are not inhabited by humans, but by pale elves, who live for centuries and value strength and combat skill more than anything. Their beautiful women are as enthusiastic about martial arts as the men, and they are just as strong on the battlefields, which are illuminated only by ghostly moonlight.

According to the custom in Irtita, girls are brought up separately from their peers. For the first two hundred years they see neither boys nor grown men, and give themselves over to games and weapons training under the watchful eye of experienced instructors. Then a time of vague longing arises, and they leave their maiden kingdom and go searching for their chosen one. They search for happiness, crossing swords with men again and again, and only someone that can defeat the Elf in combat can hope to receive her good favour.

The three moons and the multitude of bright stars that constantly illuminate the fields and hills of Irtita with a pale light, combined to form a unique design at the moment when the elf Alicia was born. The magical design in the dark sky bestowed on the new born a rare gift - the ability to draw strength from the night-time heavenly bodies during battle. As as the sun never rises in Irtita, and the sky is always filled with stars, Alicia turned into a warrior that never experienced defeat. The Elves, who had heard from their wise ones about worlds where night is replaced by day, called Alicia the «Queen of the Night». Upon reaching the age of two hundred, Alicia was quick to realize that her gift was more like a curse - one after another she defeated the men in her tribe, and found nobody to equal her. Despite her rare beauty and nobility, Alicia looked as if she would have an unhappy ending, as adult Elves cannot bear loneliness and slowly fade away because of it over a couple of hundred years.

She had already completely surrendered to despondency when news reached her ears of a powerful sorcerer, who was feared by even the strongest warriors of Irtita and who had spent all his life in battles and hunting for monsters. Alicia searched for the mage and challenged him to fight. However, even the strongest magic and most ancient of spells used by the mage did not help him defeat Alicia. It is difficult to say whether the mage really was weaker than Alicia, or he simply surrendered to her so he could then happily return to his adventures, without being distracted by romance, but when he was recovering after the fight, he listened sympathetically to the story of the unfortunate Elf. - You will never find an equal here, daughter of Irtita! The local men are only fit to sharpen your sword and mend your armour. But I know a world, bathed in sunshine, where the noise of battle never dies down, like the crash of waves on the sea shore. Those who live there are called «people», and their constant battles have made the representatives of this race strong and merciless. What's more, they have special armour, called Juggernaut, in which people become the equal of gods of strength. This world is called Haradan, if you are ever to experience the bitterness of defeat, which will seem sweeter than honey, then it will be there. I will help send you there with my special spells, and you can try to find yourself a worthy partner...

So desperate was Alicia that she agreed to the mage's proposal without giving it a second thought. When the spell was uttered, the air around her started to shake and flow, and along with it the black mountains against the twilight sky started to flutter. The ground became soft, like tender Irtita moss, and then it completely disappeared from under her feet. Another instant and Alicia was shielding her eyes against the unbearable glare of the Haradan sun. Her soft, milky skin, caressed by the silver light of the moon and the glow of emerald stars, started to burn, as if scalded with boiling water. Alicia's legendary strength left her, dispersing like night shadows in daylight. - Anyway, I don't know yet what the men here look like... - Alicia muttered, shielding her eyes against the glaring sun with the blade of her trusty sword.

Whoever is victorious in a battle with Alicia can count on her eternal loyalty, and then the swift blade of the Elf, light like a moonbeam and sharp like the sickle of the young moon, will fell your enemies like ripe ears of corn. Only, beware of summoning Alicia to fight when the Haradan sun has gone down behind the horizon - the moon and stars will give the «Queen of the Night» amazing power!
